Peter Astl represents the fifth generation to run the Pletzernhof. He grew up at an altitude of 1,300 meters, just below the middle station of the Hornbahn cable car. The farm is surrounded by lush pastures offering breathtaking views of the Kitzbühel Alps and the Kaiser Mountains. The access road to the old homestead was only built in 2015, the same year Peter Astl and his wife Andrea took over the family farm.
The young cattle spend the summer on the alpine pasture behind the house, where abundant grazing provides a rich table before they return to the barn for the winter. Pigs are also kept during the summer, mainly for the family’s own needs, and they too are raised outdoors. The farm’s “animal heart” also includes six alpacas. In winter, the green meadows are transformed into the Black Horn ski slope, which, due to increasingly frequent snow shortages, is now maintained primarily as a ski touring area. This is only possible thanks to the consistent management of the grasslands; otherwise, the alpine meadows would become overgrown and the risk of glide avalanches would increase. Andrea and the children watch the New Year’s fireworks and the famous Hahnenkamm race from the quiet distance of their farm, while Peter and his father enjoy joining the crowds from time to time.
