Over the course of 10,000 years of the Neolithic period, some 100,000 structures were built around the world, yet today we know surprisingly little about their purpose or how they were constructed. The supposedly “primitive” Stone Age culture was not confined to the Mediterranean region — it emerged across the globe at roughly the same time. Archaeological finds in the Far East, Japan, India, Korea, Mongolia, what is now the United States, and many other places suggest that we are dealing with a culture that must have been anything but primitive.
