Albania in southeastern Europe — situated between Greece, North Macedonia, Kosovo, and Montenegro — is home to an astonishing diversity of landscapes. Flat coastal regions give way to rugged karst landscapes, snow-covered mountain ranges, wild gorges, thundering waterfalls, deep-blue lakes, and pristine rivers, providing the ideal conditions for an exceptionally rich variety of flora and fauna. With an average of eleven different plant species per hectare, Albania is far above the European average of fewer than one species.
Decades of conflict spared large parts of the country from extensive exploitation. Much like the border regions between East and West, Albania has preserved areas of untouched wilderness. Former military exclusion zones have now been designated as national parks.
