Souwiesou Leiwand. Steirerleit in Wien

Vienna is the second-largest Styrian city. Its first major boom came during the waves of migration in the 19th century, when the “Styrian community” in Vienna began to grow significantly. Since then, the Styrian presence in the Austrian capital has continuously increased. Today, around 100,000 people from Styria live in the Danube metropolis.

Styria is considered “leiwand” (great) by almost everyone in Vienna—or “souwiesou leiwand,” as the Styrians who have moved there might put it. This positive connotation gives Styria a rather unique position among Austria’s federal states. A significant contribution to this reputation has been made by the “immigrants” themselves, who have settled in Vienna and left their mark there. Although Vienna, the capital of Spritz wine, is not entirely Styrian just because Styrian pumpkin seed oil is involved everywhere, the Styrian identity becomes particularly visible through the “Association of Styrians in Vienna,” founded in 1896. For more than 125 years, the association has seen itself as a service hub for networking and connection. Its history must also be viewed in a broader historical context: 125 years marked by different political systems, wars, economic crises, persecution, collapse, liberation, and economic boom years.

125 years of Austrian history and culture are reflected in influential historical figures with Styrian roots. Through their life stories, the changing history of the past 125 years and that of the association itself becomes visible.

The essential element of this film is people—personalities who tell us what it is like to live as a Styrian in Vienna. These individuals and their stories carry the film. They speak about their lives, their experiences, and both the good and the difficult sides of their journeys.
