He is one of the figures that Austrian history has forgotten: Robert Bernardis, born in Innsbruck in 1908, was the only Austrian to play a key role in the assassination attempt on Hitler on July 20, 1944. Executed shortly afterwards, his life is a striking example of the transformation of an officer who, confronted with Hitler’s inhumane warfare, became one of his determined opponents.
