The empire of Charles V, in which “the sun never sets”, provides a window of opportunity for females to take power. It is simply too vast for one man to govern alone, and division and wars are a constant threat. Charles knows that the greatest loyalty is to be found among members of his own family. Two extraordinary women, Margaret of Austria and Mary of Hungary, rise to the occasion, governing by Charles’ side and thereby influencing the fate of Europe.
