A global network of bankers, lawyers, and mega-rich investors are defrauding European treasuries of €146 billion. Two women try to put a stop to it, but the states and the banks seem to prevent their efforts at all costs.
Pay a tax, get it refunded twice, and claim it's legal: that’s a Cum-Ex deal.Young tax lawyer Sven Lebert and his boss Dr. Bernd Hausner expand thisscheme to private investors, developing a global network of banks, lawyers,and investors that steal billions from European citizens. In Denmark, taxofficials Inger Brøgger and Niels Jensen watch helplessly as state fundsvanish in what appears to be similar schemes, with seemingly little supportfrom bankers or politicians. When Niels faces financial struggles andpersonal pressures, he too loses his moral compass and defrauds the DanishTreasury. In Germany, district attorney Lena Birkwald uncovers the massivefraud and faces fierce resistance from banks and politicians. Determined toprevent the usual outcome—where minor players are caught while themasterminds walk free—she fights tirelessly to bring those truly responsibleto justice.
