With Erich Fried, political poetry experiences a renaissance. He voiced uncompromising criticism of politics and society, for which he was celebrated like a pop star by some and vilified by others. His experiences under fascism made him a tireless advocate for peace, who was even willing to confront his enemies with open arms.
