The Imperial Crown – Myth, Mystery and Majesty

The documentary "The Imperial Crown – Myth, Mystery and Majesty" accompanies an international interdisciplinary team of researchers as they examine the iconic symbol of power of the Holy Roman Empire, the Reichskrone or "Imperial Crown".

For more than 800 years, the Holy Roman Empire determined the fate of much of the European continent, irrespective of language, religious and cultural barriers. One object, above all, symbolised the great power of the realm: the Reichskrone or imperial crown. The crown's past is almost as fascinating, contentious and mysterious as European history itself.

Both the artistic and historical significance of this "crown of crowns" make it truly unique. It is considered a masterpiece of the goldsmith's art and one of the greatest symbols of power on the planet. The crown is made from a serious of plates decorated with gold wire that allows the inset colourful precious stones to appear as though they are floating. As a result of the construction method, light can fall on the stones from behind, causing them to glitter and shine – something the crown's maker undoubtably intended. Who this maker was, and who commissioned the crown, is shrouded in mystery.
