Austria, 1937: Seventeen-year-old Franz Huchel (Simon Morzé) leaves his home village on Lake Attersee to begin an apprenticeship with Viennese tobacconist Otto Trsnjek (Johannes Krisch). Among the regular customers of the small tobacco shop is Sigmund Freud (Bruno Ganz), already marked by old age and illness, who immediately fascinates Franz. When the young man falls unhappily in love with the beautiful variety dancer Anezka (Emma Drogunova), he turns to Freud for advice, only to discover that the world-famous psychoanalyst finds the female sex every bit as mysterious as he does. Nevertheless, Franz is determined to fight for his love, but soon finds himself caught up in the turmoil of political events as Hitler’s troops seize power…
