Tyrol, early 1930s: Michael Unterguggenberger, the newly elected mayor of the town of Wörgl, must save his hometown from financial collapse. In the wake of the Great Depression, many people are left without work, while nationalism and antisemitism are on the rise. In this seemingly hopeless situation, Unterguggenberger dares to try an experiment: he prints his own currency for the citizens of his town. In doing so, he not only revitalizes Wörgl’s economy but also sparks hope around the world — in Germany, France, and even the United States. But Unterguggenberger has failed to reckon with the Austrian National Bank. It takes him to court and ultimately bans his experiment.
