In an almost forensic investigation, a low-pressure system was tracked from its formation over the Atlantic, north of the Azores, to the havoc it wreaked with storms and snow in the Alps. The “Universum” team, led by director Kurt Mayer, pieces together a spectacular chain of clues, tracing the birth of the Atlantic cold front in the horse latitudes, the development of the dreaded Genoa low, and finally the foehn storm over Central Europe.
New findings about the “European El Niño” provide the focal point for climate-related questions that particularly affect the inhabitants of the Alpine region.
