The Almendro is one of the most impressive giant trees in the rainforests of Costa Rica. From its roots to its crown, it provides a home for nearly a thousand different organisms, and more than sixty animal species feed on its fruit.
The Almendro and the Great Green Macaw, or Lapa Verde, are inseparably linked. This magnificent parrot nests in the hollows of Almendro trees and feeds mainly on their almond-shaped kernels. The two tropical beauties once formed a promising partnership. Deforestation and extensive logging have plunged both the tree and its parrot into a deep crisis. Now the pair faces an uncertain future.
