The prominent wolf experts Christoph and Barbara Promberger, who are highly familiar with relevant studies from around the world, visited the zone in 2009 to assess the situation for themselves. They were astonished by the apparent abundance of wolves, which seem to find ideal living conditions there.
The Prombergers were equally surprised that, until then, no one had asked the many questions that immediately arose: How many wolves are actually living in the area? How do the animals cope with radiation? Are they migrants that will eventually die in the zone? Or is there now an established, native population? If so, is it healthy and stable? Could wolves from Chernobyl now even be migrating to other areas? Does the absence of humans outweigh the effects of the radioactive contamination that is still present?
