In 2009 biologists Christoph and Barbara Promberger traveled to The Zone to get an idea of the apparently large number of wolves that find this the perfect habitat. These wolf experts were astonished that nobody had raised the questions that immediately crossed their minds: how many wolves actually lived here? How could the animals bear the radioactivity? Were they simply migrants who would sooner or later die in The Zone or perhaps a native population? If so, is the environment healthy and stable? Is it possible that some wolves have spread from Chernobyl to other areas? Is the absence of men more impactful than the still-present radioactive contamination?
